Floor drain water seal depth: how deep is enough to block sewer gas?

Water Seal Depth Explained

Many purchasing customers may wonder how deep the water seal should be to effectively block the stench from the sewer.

The water seal depth refers to the vertical distance from the water surface to the bottom of the seal. If the depth is insufficient, the seal effect is easily lost due to water evaporation, fluctuations in pipe pressure, and the drainage siphoning effect. The unpleasant smell can then flow back through the pipes into the room. The conventional recommended range is 50–100mm. Beyond 100mm, the drainage resistance increases, and problems such as water accumulation and slow flow speed may occur, which is not suitable for high-frequency drainage scenarios in shower areas.

It is also necessary to note the distinction here. 50mm is the factory-specified static water seal height. In environments with low water usage over a long period, water continuously evaporates. When the remaining water seal drops below 20mm, the anti-smell function basically fails. Therefore, when supplying products to home decoration, hotel, and apartment projects, it is recommended to choose styles with a nominal water seal of ≥50mm. At the same time, a water replenishment design can be combined to reduce complaints about dryness and unpleasant odors.
